Safelite Acquires Henderson Glass, Michigan Institution Founded in 1915

Safelite Group announced on July 19, 2022, that it had completed the acquisition of Henderson Glass in Michigan, with the transaction having closed July 15. The deal represented a significant moment in Michigan glass industry history: Henderson Glass had been founded in 1915 and was one of the state's most established automotive and residential glass operations.

Safelite president and CEO Renee Cacchillo said Henderson Glass's "long-standing history of outstanding customer service and commitment to high-quality work" aligned with Safelite's stated mission. The company welcomed Henderson's associates to the broader Safelite organization.

The Henderson acquisition was Safelite's second major auto glass deal in quick succession after Frontier Glass in late May, and it followed a pattern of targeting Michigan specifically—a state where Safelite was looking to deepen coverage in a major auto industry market. Michigan's concentration of OEM vehicle production facilities and the correspondingly high rate of new-technology vehicles on local roads made it a strategically attractive market for a company positioning itself as the national leader in ADAS recalibration.

Henderson's 107-year operating history meant its acquisition carried cultural significance beyond the financial terms. Family-owned or long-established operations like Henderson represent institutional knowledge—experienced technicians, customer loyalty built over decades, and community relationships—that is genuinely difficult to replicate organically. Their absorption into national chains is a structural transformation of the industry that accelerated materially in 2022.

For surviving independent operators in Michigan and other states where Safelite was active in 2022, the Henderson transaction was a data point: the national chain was willing to acquire operators at any scale and vintage, provided the business had demonstrated quality and customer relationships worth preserving.

The Henderson acquisition also raised the question of what becomes of the institutional knowledge embedded in a century-old operation. Experienced technicians from acquired shops sometimes stayed under the new ownership; others left to join remaining independents or started their own operations.
