NSG Group—the Japan-based parent of the Pilkington glass brand—announced on September 7, 2021, that Mercedes-Benz AG had selected it to supply the augmented reality head-up display windshield fitted to the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The contract marked the commercial launch of what NSG described as the world's first AR-HUD windshield, integrating display optics directly into the glass substrate.

The NSG AR-HUD technology relies on an enhanced version of the company's proprietary Advanced Press Bending manufacturing process. That process allows the windshield to be shaped with the dimensional precision required to project augmented reality navigation cues—such as turning arrows overlaid on the actual road surface—at consistent focal depths across the driver's field of view. Standard press-bending tolerances, which are adequate for conventional windshields, are insufficient for the optical performance an AR system demands.

As an additional feature, NSG incorporated solar-reflecting technology that also de-ices the windscreen using invisible heating elements. The high solar-reflecting coating extends through to the rear of the vehicle, reducing thermal load across the entire glass area. This dual function—managing solar heat gain while providing the electrical heating needed to clear ice from the HUD projection zone—required coordinated coating design.

For aftermarket auto glass technicians, the NSG-Mercedes partnership carries important long-term implications. AR-HUD windshields contain embedded electrical connectors, specialized interlayer films, and wedge-shaped laminate profiles that create the correct focal plane for the projected image. Replacing such a windshield with a non-OEM part will almost certainly degrade or eliminate the AR-HUD function, and recalibration of the HUD projection angle typically requires OEM-level tooling.

The S-Class carries other ADAS systems—including a forward-facing camera, radar, and LIDAR—that require recalibration after any windshield service. Shops should be aware that the AR-HUD calibration process is separate from the ADAS camera calibration and may require a Mercedes-Benz dealer or a specialist with OEM scan tools. Technicians who are not equipped for this work should inform customers before beginning a windshield removal.

The proliferation of HUD-equipped and AR-equipped vehicles across premium and near-premium segments is accelerating. NSG's move into the AR-HUD space alongside competitors including AGC and Saint-Gobain signals that specialized windshield glass—requiring precise optical coatings, heating elements, and tolerance specifications—will represent a growing share of replacement volume in the years ahead.
