AGSC Formally Announces ANSI Approval of Updated AGRSS Standard With Calibration Provisions

As December 2022 drew toward its close, the Auto Glass Safety Council formally published its announcement that the American National Standards Institute had approved the ANSI/AGSC/AGRSS 005-2022 revision—completing a standards development process that had been underway since the AGSC's January 2021 committee work began incorporating ADAS calibration requirements.

The AGSC, a non-profit organization dedicated to safe repair and replacement of auto glass, described the approval as a "major safety update" to a standard that had last been comprehensively revised in 2018. The 005-2022 designation indicated this was the fifth edition of the AGRSS Standard since its 1999 adoption—each revision reflecting the evolving technical complexity of auto glass replacement.

The calibration provisions in 005-2022 addressed multiple dimensions of the ADAS calibration requirement: the conditions under which calibration is mandated following windshield replacement (essentially any vehicle with a camera or sensor mounted to or through the windshield), the documentation that shops must generate and retain, and the technical requirements for both static and dynamic calibration procedures.

AGSC noted that the standard remained a living document—subject to amendment as new vehicle systems and calibration requirements emerged. The committee structure that had developed 005-2022 would continue to review and update the document, with ADAS technology evolving rapidly enough to expect meaningful new guidance within the next revision cycle.

For shop owners finalizing their 2022 business reviews, the AGRSS 005-2022 approval was both a year-end capstone and a starting gun for 2023 compliance planning. Shops that entered 2023 with calibration equipment, documented procedures and customer communication about calibration requirements in place were positioned to meet the standard; those that did not had a compliance gap to address before their next AGSC registration renewal.

The December 2022 AGSC announcement also carried significance for shops in states where AGRSS registration was referenced in state regulations or insurer contract language. In those jurisdictions, the approved 005-2022 standard was now formally part of the regulatory or contractual compliance framework, not merely an industry voluntary standard. Shops operating under those regulatory or contractual references needed to treat 005-2022 compliance as a legal or contractual obligation, not simply an industry best practice choice.
